I have been an astrologer for over 25 years – not a very long time when considering how old astrology really is. I actually began studying 35 years ago, yet still I am in awe of how mysterious and magical, but also how practical and down to earth (yes, I said down to earth) astrology is! Understanding astrology is understanding ourselves. Astrology has gained in popularity with the many wonderful websites that are now available, but I am still shocked when people, once they know that I am an astrologer, stick out their hand to me and say, “read my palm”. Seriously. So here is a little bit about this star stuff without getting into the complicated language of ‘astrologese’.
Astrology. Simple – the study of the stars. A 3000 year study which began when someone looked up to the sky, observed the planets, observed the people, observed events, and said, “Wow, something is happening here!” Who, I wonder, started it? Who actually had the insight to understand the symbolism, the messages and the meaning in our magnificent heavens? We may not know the names of our earliest star-observers, but we know this science and art was embraced by Ptolemy, Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Nostradamus, Leo and Jung. No shoddy roster!
Astrology was, and is, for people who are seeking answers. Long ago the questions had to do with feast or famine, war or peace, power and rulership, failures and falls. Now it is a different story, or shall I say, study. It is personal. We are no longer talking about the rise or fall of Rome, now it’s the rise or fall of our human Spirit. Planets, houses, aspects, ascendants, descendants, midheavens, midpoints, progressions, directions and so much more!! Astrology. Not so simple.
Astrology 101. Pre-requisite…an open mind. An astrologer charts the map of the heavens by using the exact time of an individual’s birth. Our first breath is like the shutter of a camera, freeze-framing the positions of the planets in the sky at that very moment. That picture speaks of identity, emotion, creativity, power, passion, hopes, dreams, possibilities and potential. It also speaks of struggle and pain. But we are not ruled by our birth chart! It is a tool for guidance, a map to give us direction. For no matter how enormous, magnificent and magical the sky is, it pales in comparison to the tiny 7 pound, 21 inch child born with free will and who is imbued with fire and Spirit! Yes, we create our own destinies, but why not get by with a little help from our friends…
The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Pluto may have been demoted by astronomers, but modern astrologers understand that tiny Pluto packs a mighty transformational punch. He is still on our roster of planets. Now, for those of you who know anything about astrology, I can hear you now…”With friends like Saturn and Pluto, who needs enemies?” Okay, so I wouldn’t invite them to a Sunday Barbeque, but I would invite Saturn to help me organize and structure my goals and ambitions. If I don’t enlist his help, he’ll gladly show me how much I need him when I take a look at my life and see that I’m going nowhere fast. We can find our deepest pain connected with Pluto, but if we are brave and walk alongside him, we will discover our greatest power and deepest desires. To reiterate - The planets do not have power of over us! The energy of the planets represent specific functions within us. It’s up to us to choose how we use that energy! An astrologer helps you understand that.
The Sun represents our identity and self-expression. The moon sheds light on our emotions and the past. Mercury speaks of our communication needs and the process of how we think. Venus, what we want and value. Mars incites us! What is your personal style? Do you take action in a methodical, non-combative approach like Mars in Virgo or are you hotheaded like Mars in Aries? You see, the sign the planet is in indicates how that particular function (planetary energy) operates. The planet is the verb and the sign is the adjective! Mighty Jupiter teaches us about self-confidence and faith, but when used unwisely, selfishness and folly. Saturn, structure and discipline. Neptune inspires or deceives! The planet Uranus urges us toward our individuality and independence. And finally, Pluto, the smallest planet packing the biggest punch, for understanding and facing the energy of Pluto can help us aspire to our true destiny!
The debate of the validity of astrology will go on forever. The question of it being a science or an art will always loom large. But for me, astrology is a science in that the birth time is calculated and the planets charted. The meaning of the planets, signs, houses and all other aspects is studied and learned. Astrology is an art which comes from the intuitive, insightful astrologer who puts the pieces of our individual puzzle together to help guide us toward a deeper understanding and inner awareness of our magnificent potential!
Astrology. Simply wonderful.
